Introduction to Parenting & Adoption Having children is one of the most exhilarating, exhausting and rewarding endeavors. For many people it is a much planned for experience and for others a totally unexpected event. However one becomes a parent, though, it is probably fair to say that no one is ever truly prepared. For lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender parents, there are unique struggles in becoming parents, and (depending on which part of the country we live) retaining custody of our children. The laws in most places do not recognize our families, which means we must create legal paperwork that protects our children. Some of us struggle with whether or how our sexual orientations or gender expressions will be damaging to our children, while others simply struggle with how to build our families. Unlike most heterosexual people, LGBT people need to find the resources for donor insemination or surrogacy, or find paths through the adoption world, in order to begin their families.
