The speakers are coming from the corners of the country and represent nationally and internationally recognized
experts in tbe fields of biology, medicine, therapy and religion.
Objectives
Hear from transsexual professional experts and a specialist in gender therapy,
Learn about gender-variance from medical, psychological, and spiritual counseling experts.
Understand therapy techniques and issues in working with gender-variant adults, youth, children and their families.
As a result of this symposium, participants will:
Increase their ability to provide effective therapy and support for gender-variant people and their families.
Increase their understanding of terminology and concepts about gender-variance.
Differentiate between biological sex, gender identity, gender role and sexual orientation.
Recognize gender-variance as a normal, but difficult human condition.
Demythologize and depathologize gender variance medically and psychologically.
Increase awareness of societal biases impacting providers impartiality.
The current estimate of the prevalence of transgender is 1:1000 to
1:2000, and births with ambiguous sex 1:2000.

Biological Aspects of Gender & Sexuality
Joan Roughgarden, Ph.D.
Stanford University
Professor of Biological Sciences & Ecology
Author of Evolution's Rainbow, winner of the American Library's Stonewall Prize for Nonfiction Literature. Dr.
Roughgarden will discuss her issues with Darwin's theory of sexual selection by proposing alternatives based upon
experimental observation of a number of animal species. Her research indicates that diversity in all of nature
is natural and healthy. Professor Roughgarden transitioned from male to female and had Gender Reassignment Surgery
in 1999. |

Medical & Psychological Issues of the Transition Process
D. Beth Ryan, MD, MS
Reynolds Army Community Hospital
Lawton, OK
Dr. Ryan will share her experiences, both personal and medical, in going through Gender Reassignment Surgery and
transitioning from male to female. During this process, she retained her position as a civilian physician in the
Army hospital. Her Masters in Psychology thesis is based on the medical & psychological Issues of the transition
process. Dr. Ryan is a member of the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association which formulates
the Standards of Care for hormone and surgical procedures. |

Medical Biology of Transsexualism & Ambiguous Sex

Dr. Menking has been an active and popular speaker conducting workshops on the Biology of Homosexuality and Transgender.
Prior to her retirement in 1991, she was a teaching patient attendant at Wesley Pediatric Clinic for the University
of Kansas and lecturer at Wichita State University. She is married to Manfred Menking, MD a retired pediatric endocrinologist.
