Trainings: Healing from Domestic Violence and Sexual Trauma
Overview of Domestic Violence and Sexual Trauma
This workshop will examine various issues in domestic violence including
wife battering, relationship violence and child abuse. Also examined are issues of sexual abuse, rape, sexual assault,
dating violence, elder abuse and domestic violence in gay and lesbian relationships. Discussion of the history
and statistical incidence, theories and causes of violence and implications for intervention are also addressed.
Gender, race/ethnicity and class and cultural issues as well as the treatment of survivors and perpetrators will
be examined. Participants will acquire knowledge of the battered women's syndrome, the cycle of abuse, learned
helplessness, batterers' treatment, post-traumatic stress disorder and trauma recovery. |
Healing Trauma in LGBT Communities
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender [LGBT] people are affected by
trauma through sexual assault, childhood sexual abuse, bias-related crimes and domestic violence and experience
unique psychosocial issues related to homophobia. This workshop will increase participants' knowledge base of trauma
issues in the lives of [LGBT] people and help them acquire an understanding of how trauma impacts sexual and gender
identity development. Additionally they will develop a context of the layers of traumatic issues for LGBT people
and examine treatment strategies for healing trauma. The impact of post-traumatic stress disorder, increased substance
abuse, exposure to unsafe sex practices and relationship patterns and parenting issues will be discussed. |
