Trainings: Relationships, Families and Parenting

Relationships and Family Therapy
This workshop is an overview of basic counseling theories of marriage and family therapy and an examination of "systems thinking" that form the foundation of family therapy. This includes the various schools of family therapy, including structural, intergenerational, psychodynamic and humanistic. The developmental stages and transitions of family life will be examined, as will various social problems and policies that impact the integrity of contemporary family life. The diversity of American family types (i.e. single, dual-income, childless, step, gay and lesbian) and issues of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual identity, socio-economic class and religion will be examined as they relate to family and marriage therapy.

Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Families
Lesbian and gay couples struggle with developing relationships within a primarily hostile culture. Issues of coming-out, family of origin support, relationship intimacy are paramount. Additionally, bisexual people, whether they are in primary heterosexual or homosexual relationships, struggle with issues of identity, intimacy and family development. Many lesbian, gay, bisexual [LGB] people are also parents through birth or adoption, from previous relationships and current ones. Understanding how gay and lesbian people become parents and create families will be discussed. Other issues include: securing the rights of both parents, parenting in same-sex homes, children's responses to having lesbian and gay parents, donor insemination, being out with adoption agencies, coping with homophobia in the school system and divorce.
