Overview of Addictions and Recovery
This workshop is an overview of addictions, including substance abuse,
alcoholism and the recovery process. Topics to be discussed include the disease theory of addiction, relapse prevention,
co-dependency and an overview of the various substances abused and their impact on physiological and psychological
issues of tolerance, withdrawal and abstinence. The relationship of gender, race, ethnicity and sexual identity
in treatment and recovery will be examined, as will family issues including children from substance abusing families
and the challenges for families in recovery. |
Addictions in the LGBT Community
This workshop will assist clinicians in understanding the unique needs
of Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender [LGBT] families affected by substance abuse. It will increase their knowledge
base of issues and challenges affecting LGBT families in recovery and examine sexual and gender identity and how
it impacts on family development. Participants will develop an understanding of the effects of societal oppression
on both family development and substance abuse and acquire effective strategies for intervening in dysfunctional
patterns in skilled, competent and non-homophobic ways. This workshop will assist therapists in skilled, sensitive
approaches to working with LGBT couples and families living with active addiction or the challenges of recovery
in an dynamic, learning environment. |
