Trainings: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues
Working with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Clients
This workshop is an overview of the issues facing Lesbian, gay, bisexual
and transgender [LGBT] people as they face coming-out, developing intimate relationships, parenting and other developmental
processes. Also examined are various mental health concerns such as addictions, homophobia and domestic violence
that can impact on the daily lives of LGBT people. Participants will develop a basic understanding of the issues
impacting these communities and develop skills to assist them in working with this population. |
Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Families
Lesbian and gay couples struggle with developing relationships within
a primarily hostile culture. Issues of coming-out, family of origin support, relationship intimacy are paramount.
Additionally, bisexual people, whether they are in primary heterosexual or homosexual relationships, struggle with
issues of identity, intimacy and family development. Many lesbian, gay, bisexual [LGB] people are also parents
through birth or adoption, from previous relationships and current ones. Understanding how gay and lesbian people
become parents and create families will be discussed. Other issues include: securing the rights of both parents,
parenting in same-sex homes, children's responses to having lesbian and gay parents., donor insemination, being
out with adoption agencies, coping with homophobia in the school system and divorce. |
Addictions in the LGBT Community
This workshop will assist clinicians in understanding the unique needs
of Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender [LGBT] families affected by substance abuse. It will increase their knowledge
base of issues and challenges affecting LGBT families in recovery and examine sexual and gender identity and how
it impacts on family development. Participants will develop an understanding of the effects of societal oppression
on both family development and substance abuse and acquire effective strategies for intervening in dysfunctional
patterns in skilled, competent and non-homophobic ways. This workshop will assist therapists in skilled, sensitive
approaches to working with LGBT couples and families living with active addiction or the challenges of recovery
in an dynamic, learning environment. |
Transgender Emergence
This workshop is an overview of transgenderism focusing on clinical
techniques to assist transgendered people to move through the process of transgender Emergence in a holistic manner,
and to assist their families in coping with these systemic changes. Traditionally gender identity issues have been
pathologized by clinicians placed in the role of "gatekeeper; this workshop frames transgender emergence as
a normative and spiritual process of identity development. Issues to be discussed include: the differences -- and
sites of overlap -- between sexual and gender identities, the impact of transgenderism on intimate relationships,
the humane treatment of intersexed infants and utilization the Standards of Care for ethical treatment of transgender
people developed by the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association. |
Healing Trauma in LGBT Communities
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender [LGBT] people are affected by
trauma through sexual assault, childhood sexual abuse, bias-related crimes and domestic violence and experience
unique psychosocial issues related to homophobia. This workshop will increase participants' knowledge base of trauma
issues in the lives of [LGBT] people and help them acquire an understanding of how trauma impacts sexual and gender
identity development. Additionally they will develop a context of the layers of traumatic issues for LGBT people
and examine treatment strategies for healing trauma. The impact of post-traumatic stress disorder, increased substance
abuse, exposure to unsafe sex practices and relationship patterns and parenting issues will be discussed. |
